Stargazing Opportunities

Night Hike at Resaca de la Palma State Park

On the last Friday of each month, STARS and UTRGV astrophysicists open the doors of the Cristina Torres Memorial Observatory to the public. CTMO is located at Resaca de la Palma State Park in northern Brownsville. Starting at sunset, Park Rangers take participants on a hike through one of the park's many trails. The hike ends at the observatory, where community members can witness the cosmos through CTMO's 17" reflector telescope.

To register for a Night Hike, contact the Resaca de la Palma State Park at (956) 350-2920.

Tu Salud ¡Si Cuenta! on the CaraCara Trails

STARS provides weekly night sky tours and stargazing as part of the nature-based programming organized along various trails within the CaraCara Trails network. The goal of these programs are to promote healthy activity in the lower Rio Grande Valley. Other recurring sessions include yoga, bird and nature walks, and kayak excursions.

Stargazing sessions are held every Wednesday 6-7pm at Primera Trail in Harlingen, Friday 6-7pm at La Posada Montezuma Cypress Preserve in Brownsville, and Saturday 7:15-8:15pm at Rio Hondo Boat Ramp Park.
